Praying in Tongues
1Co 14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
Praying in tongues is something that for me has been a great blessing, a super strengthening gift and today more than ever before. During the day I pray in tongues constantly and sometimes between half an hour to one hour a day. I pray for all that I pray for in tongues, besides praying also in some of the languages I speak. Sure, not in public since we don't want to disturb others, but why?
When the apostle Paul affirms… For if I pray in tongues, my spirit prays, 1Co 14:14, when he then exhorts the brethren in Ephesus to pray with all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints: Eph 6:18 (notice… praying in the Spirit with all prayers) We understand that Paul is referring to praying in tongues.
Notice Judas' request to the brothers in his epistle… Jud 1:20 But you, beloved, keep building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit. He is referring to praying in tongues.
He who speaks in another language edifies himself, 1Co 14:4a
1Co 14:14-15 For if I pray in tongues, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful (doesn’t understand). What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. (Or I will pray & sing both in tongues & with my understanding).
When we pray in tongues, our physical mind stays neutral. And these are the most sincere prayers we could do, since our Spirit, who is born of God, prays according to God's will...
In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered. But he who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Rom 8:26-27
As you know sometimes our prayers can be somewhat selfish when we pray with our understanding, but when we pray with our hearts, in tongues, our only interest is the will of God. In addition to spending time in the Word, praying in tongues is one of the most practical ways to feed our Spirit, in this type of communion with God. Understanding of course, that I am referring to praying in tongues in private, since praying in tongues in a congregation entails following all the rules given by the apostle in 1Cor 14.
It is possible that you may not have received the gift of Tongues yet. Paul also exhorts us to live in love; but also to ardently desire spiritual gifts. 1Co 14:1
As you will see, our Heavenly Father is more than ready to fill you with His Holy Spirit, and with Him come the gifts as well.
Luk 11:13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?
All things whatsoever you desire, when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you shall have them. Mar 11:23
Once you have asked for that gift, when you are alone in prayer in your closet, simply release your tongue and you will see miracles.
There are many brothers in the faith who do not enjoy this wonderful and important gift, because of doctrines of men who they have learned in various denominations, which teach the Gifts of the Spirit have passed away… Remember the Word of God remains, the doctrines of men die.
I must add that I have known some Christians who were good examples of their love and efforts to reach the lost, and who did not pray in tongues, and others who did speak in tongues, but were not so dedicated. So praying in tongues is not everything. But... Why not use everything that God has put at our disposal to do our best for Him? And praying in tongues helps us to pray according to God's will, so that we can follow Him better and be better representatives of Him.
So whatever we do, let's do it all for the glory of God.
Blessings... Alejandro
