Part 1
Hi Beloved…
When we study Bible prophecy, we see that in the days before the return of the Lord to set up His Kingdom upon Earth, there are some major important events that will take place in the world. Jesus gave us signs that have been showing more & more in the recent years, but there are some, I would say, 3 major “actors” with the role of evildoers, who will play an unmistakable role: They are the Antichrist, the False Prophet, & Babylon the Great, the Mother of Prostitutes. Here I will give a rather short description of Babylon, even though it is a large subject with many aspects to cover.
Chapter 17 & 18 of the Book of Revelations contain one of the most detail description of Babylon the Great. There are quite a good number of different interpretations depending on the Christian denomination one reads, & those a very fascinating chapters for Bible lovers, to say the least. One very important aspect that you need to have in consideration when you read Bible prophecy interpretations is to see how much those interpretations are based in Scriptures that confirm what is being said; There is a very wise saying that affirms Scripture interprets Scripture.
As I share my perception on these chapters, I invite you to read or listen to other scholars so you can have a wider variety of views, & of course always asking the Lord’s Spirit to lead & guide you, as we have this great promise of Jesus in the Gospel of John…
However, when He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth. For He shall not speak of Himself, but whatever He hears, He shall speak. And He will announce to you things to come. Jn 16:13
I invite you to first read those two chapters, 17 & 18 of Revelations first.
So, I as we read through the text of Revelations 17, I will write my perspective on it, & share what I see.
1- Rev 17:1 And one of the seven angels who had the seven vials came and talked with me, saying to me, Come here, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot sitting on many waters,
So we see in this first verse that what we are going to hear next is the judgment of a great harlot who sits on many waters… I will show you the judgment of the great harlot… In verse 18 of this same chapter we are told that this great harlot is called “the woman whom you saw” & the angel explains that she is “the great city” which reigns over the kings of the world. So we understand that it is a very important city, which plays a major role in the time to come.
The angel also tells us that “the waters which you saw, where the harlot sits are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues”, so the waters are many of the nations in the world.
2- 2 with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and became drunk with the wine of her fornication, those inhabiting the earth;
We are told now that the kings of the Earth have committed fornication with her. If we take a look at the word fornication as it used in the Old Testament, together with the word adultery, we realize that the term is more used for spiritual fornication & adultery than for the actual fornication & adultery in the flesh, nevertheless the physical aspect will also be a very present sin in this city, & which will most surely also be one of its characteristic. The worship of idols has always been involved with different kinds of sexual perversions, & the link between idolatry and sexual immorality is established in many passages in the Bible as well.
I will give a few examples only, but if you look in your concordance you will find many of them.
Deut 29:24-27 even all the nations will say, “Why has Yahweh done thus to this land? What does the heat of this great anger mean?” 25 Then men will say, “Because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt, 26 and went and served other gods, and worshiped them, gods that they didn’t know, and that he had not given to them. 27 Therefore Yahweh’s anger burned against this land, to bring on it all the curses that are written in this book.
Spiritual worshiping of other gods was the sin by which Israel ended receiving the judgments God had warned them through Moses when he received the Law if they were to go after other gods.
The first time we find the word fornication in the KJV, we find that Jehoram, king of Judah set up places of worship in the mountains of Judah… 2Ch 21:11 Besides he made high places in the mountains of Judah, and caused the people of Jerusalem to commit fornication, and led astray Judah.
Then in Ezekiel we read…
Eze 16:35 “Therefore, prostitute, hear Yahweh’s word: 36 ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh, “Because your filthiness was poured out, and your nakedness uncovered through your prostitution with your lovers; and because of all the idols of your abominations, and for the blood of your children, that you gave to them;
Eze 23:36-37 and Yahweh said to me: Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah, and declare to them their abominations,
37 that they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands? And they have committed adultery with their idols and have also caused their sons whom they bore to Me to pass through the fire to them, to devour them.
Oholah and Oholibah were names the Lord gave to the cities of Samaria (the capital) in the Kingdom of Israel and Jerusalem in the kingdom of Judah, respectively. We can understand then, that when the passage says that the kings of the earth have committed fornication with a city, it is referring to the worshiping of another god other than Yahweh.
“Become drunk with the wine of her fornication” then definitely refers to drinking whatever the city is promoting through her politics & propaganda, which most likely is in this case the promotion of religious worship of another god instead of Yahweh, which in this case will be the Image of the Beast, an idol that is to be worshiped by all nations, as she seems to be very passionate in her passion towards the Beast & does her best to get the world to commit spiritual adultery him as well, actually with Satan in the Beast, an abomination to God, as we’ll discussed below.
3- 3 And he carried me away into a desert by the Spirit. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet-colored beast, filled with names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
Now we are told about the place the woman is sited upon: a scarlet-colored beast, filled with names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns, which sounds just like the same beast of Revelations 13.
Rev 13:1 And I stood on the sand of the sea, and I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns. And on its horns were ten crowns, and on its heads was the name of blasphemy.
This beast we realize represents the world kingdoms that have ruled the Earth, whose last head (the seventh) seemed to be killed but was healed, & who turns out to be the last world dictator head of the last world empire. Rev 13:3 And I saw one of its heads as having been slain to death, and its deadly wound was healed. And all the earth marveled after the beast. So one of the signs that the rising world leader is the Antichrist himself is that of being raised from an apparent deadly wound;
4- 4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet. And she was gilded with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication.
Interesting that when we look upon purple & scarlet in the Bible, we find these colors in the book of Exodus as the colors of the veil God ordered Moses to make, veil that was to separate the Holy of hollies with the Holy place, within the Tabernacle, & in some other objects within the Tabernacle too, but color blue is not present in the woman’s dress.
Exo 26:31 And you shall make a veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined bleached linen of embroidered work. It shall be made with cherubs.
I found these colors definition in the web…
Blue: Dark blue: trust, dignity, intelligence, authority
Bright blue: cleanliness, strength, dependability, coolness. (The origin of these meanings arise from the qualities of the ocean and inland waters, most of which are more tangible.)
Light (sky) blue: peace, serenity, ethereal, spiritual, infinity (The origin of these meanings is the intangible aspects of the sky.)
Most blues convey a sense of trust, loyalty, cleanliness, and understanding.
All godly qualities, not found in Babylon the Whore;
Whereas… Purple represents meanings of wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, magic and independence.
Scarlet according to surveys in Europe and the United States, scarlet and other bright shades of red are the colors most associated with courage, force, passion, heat, and joy.
She was gilded with gold and precious stones and pearls… We find this passage in the book of Ezekiel talking about Jerusalem…
Eze 16:16 And you took from your clothes and adorned your high places with different colors, and fornicated on them, such as had not come, nor shall be. 17 And you have taken beautiful things of My gold and of My silver, which I had given you, and made images of males, and fornicated with them.
We also see the prophet Jeremiah talking about Jerusalem… Jer 4:30 and you, O desolate one, what will you do? Though you dress with crimson, though you put on ornaments of gold, though you make your eyes large with paint, you shall make yourself beautiful in vain; your lovers will despise you; they will seek your life. We read in 17:16 and the ten horns which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot and will make her desolate and naked. And they will eat her flesh and burn her with fire. That as in times past, so will Babylon’s lovers will destroy her.
There are more details we could look into as her being adorned with precious stones & pearls, but we would see a bit more on that subject in chapter 18
So as we know, the Antichrist will set his Abomination of Desolation in the temple in Jerusalem.
Mat 24:15 Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place (whoever reads, let him understand).
2Th 2:3b the man of sin shall be revealed, the son of perdition, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, setting himself forth, that he is God.
Besides the prophet Daniel also lets us know the Antichrist will set his palace in Jerusalem.
Dan 11:45a And he shall plant his palace tents between the seas in the glorious holy mountain.
These passages help us realize that the place where the last world dictator will set his palace & his capital will be none other than the city of Jerusalem. This also means no doubt Jerusalem will be the most important religious center of the world, & being most likely, the Jerusalem temple, the place where the Abomination will be placed which is most probably the very image of the Beast…
Rev 13:11 And I saw another beast coming up out of the earth. And it had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke like a dragon. 12 And it exercises all the authority of the first beast before him, and causes the earth and those dwelling in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13 And it does great wonders, so that it makes fire come down from the heaven onto the earth in the sight of men. 14 And it deceives those dwelling on the earth, because of the miracles which were given to it to do before the beast, saying to those dwelling on the earth that they should make an image to the beast who had the wound by a sword and lived. 15 And there was given to it to give a spirit to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might both speak, and might cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.
In that passage we are introduced to the False Prophet, who is definitely the most important religious leader in the world when the Antichrist gets to power & who not only does great miracles but also is the one who inspires the making of the Image of the Antichrist & the forcing all peoples of the world to commit fornication with this idol as people will worship it as if it were God, which as we saw in the passages above, the worshiping of idols as gods is one of the greatest abominations to God, & which in this last world idol the Scripture call the Great Abomination, or the Abomination that causes Desolation, as this Idol will speak & will cause all those who refuse to worship it to be put to death, most probably a robotic idol.
