The Importance of Our Words

Reading… Pro 18:20-21 A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; he shall be satisfied with the product of his lips. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it shall eat the fruit of it.

Mat 12:36-37 But I say to you that every idle word, whatever men may speak, they shall give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.

Those passages should be enough to makes us be careful with the words we say, so here I share some more passages to help us understand the importance of speaking the right way. Certainly our Lord Jesus gave it an outstanding importance…

Mat 15:18-20 But the things which come out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile the man. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies; these are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.

That is so important, we should meditate upon it and also memorize it…

It is good to bear in mind that we can easily hurt someone instead of helping him with the words we tell him. That’s why we are exhorted in Eph 4:29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Can you see it? When we address someone, we should always do it with Love, always.

We read in James 1:26 If anyone thinks to be religious among you, yet does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is vain.

Then warns us about the dangers of our words

James 3:5-12 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. Behold how little a fire kindles how large a forest! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. So the tongue is set among our members, spotting all the body and inflaming the course of nature, and being inflamed by hell. For every kind of animals, and of birds, and of reptiles, and of sea-animals, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind. But no one can tame the tongue, it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. By this we bless God, even the Father. And by this we curse men, who have come into being according to the image of God. Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a fountain send forth at the same hole the sweet and the bitter? Can the fig tree, my brothers, bear olive berries; or a vine, figs? So no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh.

So even the way we talk about others…

Tito 3:2 Put them in mind to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to every good work, to speak evil of no one, not being quarrelsome, but forbearing, showing all meekness to all men.

Jesus taught...

Mat 12:34-37 Offspring of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings out good things; and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings out evil things. But I say to you that every idle word, whatever men may speak, they shall give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned. (Good to memorize)

Because we speak about the things we put in our hearts, which means what we listen to, look at, read, etc., we are commanded to Php 4:8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

If we obey that, then when we talk, we will speak of the good things we have stored in our hearts, which then will bless those who listen to us speak.

Jesus taught…

Mar 11:23 For truly I say to you that whoever shall say to this mountain, Be moved and be cast into the sea, and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that what he said shall come to pass, he shall have whatever he said.

Let’s look at this example...

  • When people focus and meditate in the problems and difficulties surrounding us, and then they talk about them and acknowledge them, giving them importance as many people do...

"Gosh man, I don’t have enough money to pay my bills, things are so hard, I am getting sick, God doesn’t answer my prayers, I am not good enough, nobody loves me... We can see why those people receive what they are saying, because they acknowledge what they believe in their hearts, and say it with their mouth.

  • Now, because we have been focusing on God's promises like...

Phil 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. 19 But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

1Jn 4:4 You are of God, little children, and you have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

1Pe 2:24 He Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that dying to sins, we might live to righteousness; by whose stripes you were healed.

Now because we believe them in our hearts, we say... "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, and I am more than a conqueror because greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world, moreover, He is the one who heals all my diseases and supplies all my needs according to His infinite riches." Well then, that's what we will have.

The Bible has many more passages that teach about the topic, I'll just share a few more...

1Pe 3:10 For he that wants to love life and to see good days, let him restrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking guile.

Pro 10:19  In the multitude of words, sin is not lacking; but he who holds back his lips is wise.

Pro 12:14  A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth, and the reward of a man's hands shall be given to him.

Pro 18:7  A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

Pro 21:23  Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles.

Pro 16:24 Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

Love in Jesus... Alejandro
